Rather than follow the established Law & Order formula of focusing on the "nuts and bolts" of tracking down a wide variety of criminals and bringing them to trial, the spin-off series, per its title, zeroes in on a single division of the New York City justice system: the Special Victims Unit, or SVU, which dealt primarily with very heinous crimes.

Follow the team as they reconstruct a "day of disappearance" timeline that details every minute of the 24 hours prior to a disappearance and dig into every facet of the victim's life, following one simple rule: learn who the victim is in order to learn where the victim is.
